Valentine's Day Violet Letter V's

Holiday Art Project for Preschools or Daycares

Jan 21, 2009 Erica Loop

This fun Valentine's Day art project easily integrates with alphabet and color themes in the early childhood classroom.

All you need is the letter V and a few colors of tempera paints to create this simple art project. Young children can learn about color (recognition and mixing) and the alphabet while they paint a plain letter V violet for Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day Art Project Lesson Objectives

  • Letter recognition (V)
  • Exploring color and basic color theory.
  • Experimenting with art materials and processes.
  • Fine motor development

Valentine's Day Art Grade Level

This lesson can be used with children ages three through six in the preschool or daycare classroom.

Materials Needed to Create Violet Valentine's Day V's

  • Precut letter V's (these should be cut from white or other light colored construction paper or card stock).
  • Paint brushes (try a variety of sizes)
  • Tempera paints (red, blue, purple)

Letter V Lesson Process Steps

  1. Preplanning step: Adult precuts letter V's.
  2. Preplanning discussion step: Have a classroom discussion about the letterV and the color violet. Have the children name words that begin with the letter V (hint: Valentine, violet). At this time explain how the color violet can be made using other colors (red and blue).
  3. Preplanning set up step: Place the tempera paints on tables for the children to share. Set out red and blue for the children to mix. Explain to them that the paint can be mixed either on a paint tray or directly on their artwork.
  4. The children should now choose brushes (multiple sizes may be used) and can begin painting their V's. The V's will turn from white (or other light color) to violet through the use of paints.
  5. Clean up.

Valentine's Day Lesson Wrap Up

Discuss the art process used with the children. Ask questions such as, "How did you make the color violet?", "What was fun to do in this art project?", or "What was a little bit difficult to do in this art project?". Follow up the responses by addressing each of the children's statements during the class discussion.

To conclude this lesson, have a show and share mini-art show. If possible hang the art up on a viewable wall space. If not, have each child hold up his or her project one at at time. Invite the children to talk about what they have created. This will help to instill pride and ownership.

Enrichment/ Additional Activities for the Violet V Lesson

  • Create other color and letter themed art projects. For example, green letter G's or orange letter O's.
  • Instead of using paints, make a violet letter V Valentine's Day collage using a variety of violet art materials. These might be tissue paper, felt, foam, or construction paper.
  • Read a book that links to the theme. This may be Valentine's Day, the alphabet, or colors.
  • Try other color mixing activities. After the children have created violet give them additional colors to explore.

The violet Valentine's Day V art project is a fun, easy was to begin color and letter recognition within the preschool or daycare classroom. Additionally, it can be displayed as a creative letter reminder or holiday decoration.
