Preschool lesson plan ideas for teaching the letter O, the long O sound, writing the letter O and making O jewelry. Math baking measurement lesson for preschoolers.
Objectives
The students will identify the letter O.
The students make and recognize the long O sound.
The students will correctly write the letter O.
The students will identify the baking measurements cup, tablespoon and teaspoon.
Phonemic Awareness/Letter Recognition: The Long O Sound
Demonstrate the long O sound for the students. Point out how when you say the long O sound your mouth looks like an O.
Next have the students say the long O sound. Tell them to look around the room and notice how everyone’s mouth looks like an O.
Now have everyone say the long O sound once more and this time have the students trace the O shape of their mouths with their fingers.
Pass out blank paper and crayons or colored pencils. Instruct the students to draw a face with a mouth making the long O sound. Remind them that each mouth should look like the letter O. Draw an O on the board as a reminder.
After checking the papers talk to the students about how people sometimes say, “Oh!” when they are surprised. Have them add something surprising to their drawings. Place the drawings on a bulletin board titled, “Things That Make Us Say Oh!”
Handwriting:Oatmeal Os
Give each student a paper plate with uncooked oatmeal covering the bottom of it.
Let them practice writing Os in the oatmeal using their fingers. Walk around the room and visually observe that every child is writing the Os correctly. When everyone is doing well writing the Os in the oatmeal have them use a pencil or crayon to write Os on construction paper.
Use a glue stick to trace the Os and then sprinkle the oatmeal onto the glue. The students can take the oatmeal Os home to show their family the letter O.
Math: Cheerio Treats
As a class make Cheerio treats following the recipe on the back of a marshmallow package, substituting O shaped cereal for the puffed rice.
Have the students help measure the ingredients noting the different tools and labels used when measuring food such as, cup, tablespoon and teaspoon.
Eat the treats together while reviewing the baking measurements cup, tablespoon, and teaspoon.
Art: O Jewelry
Gather a variety of O shaped materials the students can use to make O necklaces or bracelets.
Have them string the Os onto yarn or plastic string.
Tie the ends of the necklaces and bracelets together and encourage the students to wear their O jewelry during the O lessons.
Movement: Hula Hoops Os
Obtain hula hoops for all or most of the children in the class to use.
Ask them what letter the hula hoops look like. Pass out the hula hoops and instruct the students to lay the Os on the ground.
Direct them to walk around the Os, hop into and out of the Os, and roll the Os to each other. Ask the kids for other ways they can move with the Os and have everyone follow their suggestions.
