Preschool activities to increase letter F recognition, to increase identification of uppercase and lowercase F and the initial F sound, and to count backwards from five.
Teach preschoolers all about the letter F in this alphabet recognition and phonics lesson plan.
Objectives
Students will recognize the uppercase letter F.
Students will recognize the lowercase letter f.
Students will match uppercase and lowercase Fs.
Students will count down from five to one.
Students will identify objects that begin with the F sound.
F Footprints
Create an uppercase F with a personal touch.
Have the students pair up and trace each other’s foot on construction paper.
Cut out the footprints and glue or tape them together to from a giant F.
Display the footprint F on the classroom door.
Sandpaper Fs
Cut the letters of the alphabet out of sandpaper.
Glue the sandpaper letters onto squares of cardstock.
Place two of the letters face down on the table.
Have the student close his eyes and turn over the letters. Ask him to feel the letters and tell you which one is the F.
Continue to play, switching the second letter after he finds the F. Add another letter to the game for more of a challenge.
Fishbowl Fs
Make an interactive bulletin board that helps students learn that F has two cases.
Draw a large fishbowl on a piece of poster board.
Cut five fish shapes out of colored cardstock or construction paper glued onto oak tag. Print a lowercase f on each fish and laminate.
Trace five fish in the fishbowl with a crayon using one of the laminated fish as a guide. Color the fish in with crayons and use a black crayon to print an uppercase F on each one.
Water down washable blue paint and use a paintbrush to cover the entire fishbowl in the paint.
Place Velcro tabs on each of the fish and show the students how to stick the little F fish on the big F fish.
Five Little Speckled Frogs Puppets
Purchase miniature foam frogs at your local craft store create fun educational puppets.
Use fabric glue to glue the frogs onto each finger of an inexpensive kid’s glove.
Cut out a blue felt pool and glue it to the palm of the glove.
Teach the children the song and finger play “Five Little Speckled Frogs.”
Show them how to move their frogs into the pool as they count down through the song.
Find the F Sound
Gather ten objects that begin with the F sound such as feathers, flowers, fish, and frogs to help students practive the F sound.
Place them on a table with ten objects that begin with different letter sounds.
Review the F sound with the students. Hold up one of the objects and ask if it begins with the F sound.
Place the object in the F sound pile or the non-F sound pile. Continue until all of the objects are in one of the two piles.
Go through the objects in the F sound pile calling attention to the initial sound. Invite the students to add other objects in the room that start with the F sound to the pile.
