Materials Needed to Create a Green Eggs and Ham Collage

  • Scissors
  • Glue and/or glue sticks
  • Markers
  • Felt or fabric scraps
  • Assorted special paper (such as metallic, tissue, or patterned)

Steps to Create a Green Eggs and Ham Collage in the Preschool Classroom

Pre-planning Steps

  1. Gather together an assortment of paper. These may include construction paper, tissue paper, or fancy metallic papers. Make sure that there is ample green paper available.
  2. Set out the paper in piles on a work space or art table.
  3. Cut the cardboard (or other thick paper) into square or rectangle shapes. These will be collaged onto. If possible, reuse old cardboard boxes instead of buying new materials.

Pre-activity Steps

  1. Read the book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss [Beginner Books: A Division of Random House, 1960] to the class.
  2. Discuss the book by asking questions such as, "What did Sam-I-am do?" or, "What color was the ham?".
  3. Talk about collage.Explain that a collage is an art form in which the artist (i.e., the child) can glue paper down onto another piece of paper.
  4. Demonstrate the collage for the class.

Process Steps

  1. Give each child a piece of the cut cardboard.
  2. Invite the children to choose a variety of paper from the piles. Remind the glass that it is necessary to share the paper.
  3. Ask the children to draw the green eggs and ham onto the paper.
  4. Have the children cut out the drawings.
  5. The green eggs and ham (each child may have more than one) can now be glued onto the cardboard.
  6. Add on other paper to the collage. Give the children the option of tearing or cutting an assortment of papers.

Green Eggs and Ham Lesson Wrap Up

Have an art show and share. Find a prominent wall or bulletin board to display this colorful child made artwork. Ask each child to talk about his or her work. If a child is reluctant to speak, try prompting him with a few questions such as, "What color are the eggs?" or, "What was the most fun thing about making the collage?".

Dr. Seuss Themed Enrichment Activities

Carry on this art lesson into other areas and other themes by tying it together with Dr. Seuss. For an animal theme try The Cat in the Hat (Random House, 1957), or for Father’s Day make a Hop on Pop (Random House, 1963) art project.

The Green Eggs and Ham color collage is a simple art lesson that introduces the preschool aged child to art through a literacy activity. Inspire a uniquely imaginative collage creation by first reading Dr. Seuss’s famous book. After the collages have been created, display the art work in a visible place for all to enjoy.
